Introducing Chicago Gamespace

Chicago Gamespace is a playable collection of top video games from history, and a gallery of artwork from the most essential games of today. It is a small but growing place where everyone may learn, play, and be inspired by this captivating art form. As owner of the gallery and curator of the opening two exhibitions, I’m hopeful Chicago Gamespace is a place of discovery, enrichment and appreciation of video games.

Video Game History Collection

More than two and a half billion people around the world play video games each year, making them one of the most relevant and resonant media of our time. Games have had a meteoric rise from their niche birth in university research labs in the 1950s and 1960s, to living rooms and arcades in the 1970s and 1980s, and online and mobile from the 1990s to today. This exhibition presents the most important games from the 20th century. These are the milestones in game history that resonated with the most hearts and minds, forever changed the medium, and endure even now.

Playable titles, artifacts and image and video documentation include Spacewar!, the Magnavox Odyssey, Video Olympics (Pong), Colossal Cave Adventure, Space Invaders, Pac-Man, Oregon Trail, Super Mario Brothers, Tetris, Sonic the Hedgehog, Game Boy, Prince of Persia, King’s Quest V, Doom, Mortal Kombat II, Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness, SimCity, Myst, Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Cyberpunk 2077

Chicago Gamespace is proud to partner with Netherlands-based Cook and Becker to exhibit the official Cyberpunk 2077 video game art print collection consisting of high quality concept art. Work from Cyberpunk developer CD PROJEKT RED and artist Josan 'Deathburger' Gonzalez juxtaposes a dystopian and grimy urbanism with colorful, neon-lit visuals. These denizens and broken streets comprise the megalopolis of Night City, the setting of Cyberpunk 2077.

CD PROJEKT RED, established in 2002, is a Polish video game developer located in Warsaw, and Kraków. The studio found an international audience through their The Witcher games, a role-playing game series based on the popular books by famed Polish fantasy writer Andrzej Sapkowski.
